An excellent and very informative introduction by the well-known Dr. Durvasula. She is an american clinical psychologist, professor of psychology and author. She is an expert and specialist in pathologoical narcissism and narcissistic abuse.
Hoovering is one of the cycles of narcissistic abuse and, unless one is very aware of this tactic, it can be very difficult to resist. ‘It takes nerves of steel to resist a hoover in person’, Dr. Ramani Durvasula.
Dr. Ramani is the author of ‘Should I stay or should I go – surviving a relationship with a narcissist’ and ‘Do you know who I am? – How to stay sane in an era of narcissism, entitlement and incivilty’
Both of these are excellent publications and are highly recommended.
I experienced a direct hoover in person fifteen months after I ended the relationship. Although one can never be fully prepared for an experience like this, I had done a lot of research and I stood my ground. It felt as if I had thick walls of protective steel were around me. I was caught off guard, as was the intention, but I refused to be sucked back into her web of abuse, madness and confusion.
